Aim and background

This one-day workshop will look at qualitative methodologies and their links to philosophy for Organization Studies. The day will consist of keynote presentations, a panel discussion, and roundtables for paper development. Speakers at this event are Jörgen Sandberg, who will offer insights on philosophy and Organization Studies; Rebecca Bednarek who will discuss the future of qualitative research in Organization Studies; and Peter Fleming on critical methods for Organization Studies. Following the keynotes, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions to a panel of prominent academics. In the afternoon, attendees will have the opportunity for feedback on either conceptual or qualitative working papers in roundtable discussions with the above leading scholars.

Attendees

The workshop is open to faculty and doctoral students, including those external to UQ, interested in advancing their understanding of how methodologies and philosophies interact.

Application process and deadline

The workshop is a one-day in-person event. Please register your attendance by 20th December 2023. For registration, please attach a 2-page CV, and indicate whether to submit a paper for the afternoon roundtables by including your paper title and 200-word abstract that explains the papers’ topic and, if empirical, methodology. You will be notified of acceptance to the workshop in week commencing 8th January 2024. Those whose papers are also accepted, will need to submit a paper of no more than 5,000 words by Monday 22nd January 2024 to j.mather@business.uq.edu.au.

Keynotes and panellists

Rebecca Bednarek is an associate professor at Victoria University of Wellington. She has written about qualitative methods in relation to global ethnography, grand challenges, ethnographic textwork, research teams, and more. She is a Guest Editor for the Organization Studies Special Issue “The Future of Qualitative Research in Management and Organization Studies”.

Peter Fleming is Professor of Organization Studies at University of Technology Business School. He has previously held positions at the University of Cambridge and University of London. Peter's recent research focuses on the future of work and the role of technology in and around modern organizations. He is a Senior Editor of Organization Studies.

Paula Jarzabkowski is Professor of Strategic Management at University of Queensland and City, University of London and Co-Lead of Practice and Process Studies. Paula researches the practice of strategy and markets in pluralistic and paradoxical contexts. She publishes this research in leading journals and has co-authored and edited several books.

Amit Nigam is a Professor in Management at Bayes Business School. His research examines the political, sensemaking, and framing processes of organizational and institutional change - with a specific emphasis on professions and occupations in change processes.

Jörgen Sandberg is Professor at the University of Queensland Business School, Honorary Professor at Warwick Business School, UK, and the Co-founder of the international conference Philosophy and Organization Studies (PHILOS). He has published extensively in the areas of competence, practice theory, sensemaking, theory development, philosophy of science, and research methodology.

Paul Spee is Associate Professor in Strategy at the University of Queensland Business School, Australia. Paul’s research builds on social practice theory, advocating for an alternative theorization of routines, strategy, new venture creation, institutions among other phenomena. Paul is a Senior Editor at Organization Studies since 2014.
