Route planning slashes costs for coach company

Launched in 1974, Mt Gravatt Coach and Travel operates a fleet of 40 vehicles from its base in Underwood, Queensland. The company runs Translink bus services in south-east Queensland under contract to the state government. It also carries over 2,000 students to and from school on a daily basis and provides charter services for schools and community groups.

The company wanted to investigate ways to improve efficiency through better route planning. Dr David Parker, an operations management specialist with UQ Business School, advised the company on the adoption of simulation modelling and route planning software.

Dr Parker led an independent appraisal of different systems to identify the solution that was best suited to the organisation’s needs.

Mt Gravatt Coach and Travel achieved a seven per cent reduction in bus and fleet travel as a result of it adopting the system, and the financial savings were such that the capital outlay was repaid within just nine months.
