Three enthusiastic University of Queensland Business School students have been recognised for their impressive portfolio management skills by finance expert Dr Darren Lee. Dr Lee said students Liang Wu (St Lucia), Mengsi Zheng (St Lucia) and Moxi Zhu (Sunnybank) excelled at their task of analysing current financial markets to produce a comprehensive investment portfolio. The winning team analysed the share market as well as current industry and economic conditions to gain a broad perspective on investment opportunities and implement an investment strategy to take advantage of profitable investments. Dr Darren Lee, finance lecturer and competition coordinator at UQBS said he was impressed by the quality and commitment of the students. "I was impressed by the quality and effort... the students went well beyond what I expected" "It was a voluntary competition, they weren't formally assessed on the work they produced. The competition was designed to encourage students to develop a deeper understanding about investing people's money as well as dealing with the limitations, challenges, and rigour of actually putting an investment portfolio together," Dr Lee said. Drawn by the spirit of competition, recent Master of Commerce graduate and team leader Liang Wu felt the opportunity gave him unique practical experience to take into the field. "The competition was designed to test strategy, not how much money we made in the short term". "The financial modelling and analysis skills that I've learnt will be essential skills in the finance industry, especially for an analyst," he said.
