Earlier this month 170 motivated UQ Business School tourism students convened at Customs House to network with some of the industry’s most prominent names at the 15th annual Meet the Industry Leaders event (MILE).
The event was attended by more than 50 tourism and hospitality industry leaders and government regulators who provided insight and advice to the final year undergraduate students on career pathways and opportunities in their organisations.
Representatives from Virgin Australia, Sofitel, Flight Centre, the Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) and others were impressed by the eagerness and talent of the Business School tourism students.
QTIC representative, Deborah Lewis, said the professional calibre of the students was remarkable.
“The energy in the room was a clear indication of the enthusiasm and focus that the students conveyed throughout the evening. Students were still engaging with industry representatives at the close of proceedings. Each year these future leaders continue to impress,” she said.
Tourism Cluster Leader and event host, Associate Professor David Solnet, said that MILE has been one of tourism’s flagship events for the past 15 years.
“This event provides an unparalleled opportunity for students to gain inside knowledge in their chosen field.
“It is a showcase of the broad range of industries and sectors where students will have careers and an opportunity for students to have face-time with professionals from those industries and organisations to gain a better understanding of the opportunities.
“It also is a nice casual environment for staff, students, and industry to network without outside pressures or distractions,” he said.
