UQ Business School Professor of Management, Dr Neal Ashkanasy, is the first Australian to be named a Fellow of the Southern Management Association (SMA), an affiliate of the prestigious US Academy of Management.

Dr Ashkanasy first became involved with SMA though an invitation to join the Editorial Review Board of their publication, the Journal of Management, which is one of the top journals in the field of management research.

“It quickly became clear to me that the SMA conference was of exceptional quality and afforded an excellent opportunity to network with outstanding colleagues.

“My most recent ARC Discovery Project for example, includes Partner Investigators from this network,” he said.

Currently, the SMA membership consists of approximately 1,000 management professors, doctoral students, and executives representing more than 200 colleges, universities, and business firms in 43 states and several foreign countries.

Dr Ashkanasy was elected as a Fellow in recognition of his significant contributions to the science and practice of management by superior research and scholarship, and his active involvement as a SMA member since 1999.

“As an Australian, I come from a little further south than the “South” of the USA, so it was quite difficult at first to break into the network.

“To be elected as one of the 50 SMA Fellows is thus a singular honour insofar as its membership includes some of the most outstanding scholars in the field of management research,” he said.
