Finance Brown Bag Seminar: Kate O'Brien
UQ academics face multiple demands outside teaching, and many of our classes have more than doubled in size over the past decade. Yet our impact on individual students remains a very important part of our job. “Ruthless compassion” is one approach to meeting these competing demands: being ruthless about how to invest limited time and resources for maximum benefit for the students, making it possible to connect to them in meaningful ways, enhance their learning and show them compassion when they most need it. Teaching our students to take responsibility for their own learning benefits us and them, and that some of the biggest impact that we have on students can be in unexpected places.
In this short seminar, I present some concrete suggestions about how to put “ruthless compassion” into practice, and will invite contributions from the audience.
