This seminar is in two parts. The first part explores how organisations are creating value from Big Data and business analytics and the challenges they are facing as they do so. The seminar reports on case studies of three large organisations and an on-going Delphi study. This will be followed by discussion of the opportunities that Big Data and predictive analytics afford business school academics for research, education and business engagement and for interdisciplinary working.

The second part of the seminar is an introduction to data science using R. R has more than 5000 thousand packages available, free of charge, that allow for many types of data science techniques, such as Bayesian analysis, regression trees, cluster analysis, social network analysis, and text mining. The workshop will focus on using R for mining and analyzing social media (Twitter, Facebook). Attendees who are interested in gaining hands-on experience are encouraged to download and install R and the development environment R Studio in advance of the seminar.
