Research Interests

  • Australian economic policy since the 1980s
    Study of the turn to neoliberalism under the Hawke and Keating governments of 1983-96 and the ways in which this "reform" programme was followed through by the Howard, Rudd and Gillard governments.
  • The crisis in the world economy
    Study of the unfolding crisis in the world economy starting with the sub-prime crisis of 2007, flowing through into the global financial crisis of 2008 and the sovereign debt crisis of 2010-11. Analysis of the rise of China and its impact on US power in the world economy.
  • Trade unionism and social democracy in Australia
    Research into the history of trade unions and the labour movement in Australia resulting in two books published by Cambridge University Press in 2008 and 2011.
