What is Ethical Clearance?
Ethical clearance is the process by which proposed research is assessed for its compliance with a variety of legislative requirements and University and School policies. These requirements are in place to ensure that safe guards are maintained for the protection of human, animal and other research subjects.
What is Ethical Clearance At UQ?
At UQ Ethical Clearance has been divided into two broad sections - Animal Welfare and Human Ethics.
Animal Welfare does not relate to research undertaken at UQ. Within Human Ethics responsibility for Ethical Clearance has devolved into two areas - Academic Staff seeking Ethical Clearance and Research students (including coursework students undertaking a research course).
UQ guidelines encompass the following principals:
- Integrity
- The good image of the University and the Academic Community
- Right to Knowledge and its Obligations
- Competence and Due Care
- General Principles of Sound Research Design
Who manages Ethical Clearance at UQ?
Academic staff applications are processed through a Central Administration Committee - Human Ethics Review Committee.
Student applications are processed by a School level committee.
Who manages Ethical Clearance at UQBS?
The UQBS Ethical Clearance Committee operates under the authority of the Research Management Committee. This committee meets electronically to process applications to ensure that straight forward requests for approval are processed in a timely fashion. Any applications which require further information or deliberation may result in a formal meeting. The Committee may refer a student application to a central committee if they feel the scope of the research is outside the boundaries of School's authority.
