A UQ alumna passionate about supporting the community has created a new scholarship targeting women of Samoan heritage wishing to study business, law or economics at UQ and needing financial support.

Janelle Donnelly completed a Master of Applied Law at UQ in 2001 and also holds a Bachelor of Laws, a Graduate Diploma in Applied Science (Environmental Management), a Bachelor of Arts (Urban Studies) and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice.

She has held various positions in infrastructure development and stakeholder engagement for organisations such as Golder Associates, Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Melbourne Water Corporation and Port of Melbourne Corporation.

Ms Donnelly said she became aware of the disadvantage in Samoan communities through family who were living there and involved in Samoan Lifeline.

“I would like to help a young Samoan woman receive a quality education at UQ so she may in turn make a positive contribution to her community,” she said.

Ms Donnelly said her passion for community development guided her career and she had been able to create change through supporting sustainable practices in some of Australia’s most important marine parks and ports.

The Janelle Donnelly Scholarship, offered for the first time this year, will provide $3000 to one student each year.
