Field of Current Research

Title of Research Area Brief Description
Culture Change for a Sustainable Future: Strategy, Culture The research is particularly concerned with the dynamics of change in a large public sector enterprise involved in a major strategic alignment process. It seeks to examine aspects of the change process with a particular focus on the role of organisational subcultures. It also seeks to examine the rhetoric of change - its deployment, reception and response. In part the examination includes a discursive approach to organisational change and involves discourse analysis.
Popular culture representations of management and organization as critical practice. This project concerns the examination of various representations of work, management and organization within popular culture. It takes the view that a sophisticated and nuanced critique of management and organisation is embodied in certain media representations and that a dynamic analytic is engendered by working between these representations and formal theory. The work has given rise to a book - Carl Rhodes & Robert Westwood, Critical Representations of Work and Organisation in Popular Culture, Routledge, 2008 as well as a number of conference and journal papers.
International and comparative management: A postcolonial critique This research provides a postcolonial analysis to international and comparative management studies (ICMS) considered as a discourse. Using notions from postcolonial theory such as orientalism, appropriation, alterity and hybridity to interrogate ICMS, the work seeks to reconfigure the field in terms of its epistemological, methodological, ethical and political commitments. There is a book to be published by Palgrave later in 2008: Westwood, R.I. & Jack, G. International and Cross-Cultural Management Studies: A Postcolonial Reading. The work has also generated journal and conference papers and other book chapters.
Humour in organisations Humour has been a relatively neglected area of research in management and organization studies despite a steady stream of work over the years. Much of the extant work has focused on functional accounts of humour in the workplace. There is a smaller strand of research that examines humour for its resistive potential and for its role in identity formation and identity work. This research is interested in these latter research trajectories. In addition to conference and journal papers the book - Westwood, R.I. & Rhodes, C. (eds.) Humour, Work and Organisation, Routledge, was published in 2007. I have a doctoral student working on these issues.
