Thesis Topic

A study of organisational strategy in response to climate change issues

Thesis Description

Nardia's PhD is investigating the strategic response of organisations to climate change issues. It is a qualitative study tracing how organisations throughout Australia's electricity supply industry are making sense of and responding to a wide variety of issues they attribute to climate change; ranging from the impact of rising temperatures and drought on infrastructure and operations, to the potential impact of emissions trading on capital investments, and the need to respond to changing market preferences.

While it is essentially a strategy dissertation, the choice of topic reflects her orientation towards environmental sustainability. Once completed, the aim is for the study to contribute in three main ways. First, to develop knowledge about how organisations identify and respond to various climate change issues. Second, to develop theory about the relationship between organisational sensemaking and strategic action along the electricity supply chain. Third, to build on the work of others by accounting for the dynamics of the natural environment in management theory so their theoretical and practical importance to business may be understood
more readily.
