Brief Description |
| Entrepreneurship and innovation-based competitive strategy |
My PhD thesis examined the role of entrepreneurship and learning capabilities in organizational innovation-based competitive strategy. Over the last few years I have extended this research area into several other areas, namely, service firm and non-profit organization competitive strategy and the impact of industry environment on a firm's competitive strategy. A large number of conference papers have been published from the research findings and journal articles have been published in Journal of Business Research (2006) European Journal of Marketing (2003), Journal of Strategic Marketing (2003), Industrial Marketing Management (2004), Queensland Review (2003) and Advances in International Marketing (2000). |
| Dynamic capabilities and the internationalisation of born-global firms |
I am the team leader of this project which is funded by a prestigious large ARC Discovery Grant (2005). This three year joint project with the Florida State University, USA in its first stage (qualitative phase) examines how dynamic capabilities of born global are built nurtured by their internationally entrepreneurial owner managers. In the second stage (mail survey) a cross national study of Australian and US born global firms is undertaken to examine cross-national differences in dynamic capabilities and their impact on the accelerated internationalization of these firms. As a result of this grant success the research team was invited to serve as special issue co-editors of the Journal of World Business on the accelerated internationalization of born global firms. Several conference papers and a journal article in the JWB special issue have been published. |
| Social entrepreneurship and innovation-based competitive strategy in not-for-profit organisations (NPOs) |
This collaborative research is funded by a UQ Development Grant. The primary focus of this study was to conceptualise the social entrepreneurship construct and examine the role of social entrepreneurship in NPO competitive strategy. Several conference papers have been published including a paper at the American Marketing Association's Summer Educators' Conference held in San Diego, USA in 2002 followed by a number of journal articles including the Journal of World Business (2006). In 2006 I was invited to serve as special issue co-editor (with Gillian Sullivan Mort) for a special issue of the International Journal of Non-profit and Voluntary Sector Marketing. I served as the Chair of Non-profit marketing Track at the Academy of marketing Science's World Marketing Congress, Verona, Italy 2007. |
| New service development (NSD)-based competitive strategy |
Collaborative research in new service development with Professor Janet McColl-Kennedy in 2001 resulted in a conceptual model of new service development-based competitive strategy. A paper based on this model won the best paper runner-up award at the American Marketing Association's Services Special Group Conference held in Sydney 2001 and has subsequently been published in the Australasian Journal of Marketing. A PhD student currently works in this project which examines the role of dynamic capabilities in NSD based competitive strategy in project oriented firms. |
| Entrepreneurial Marketing |
This research stream which examines the entrepreneurial and visionary marketing practices adopted by firms has gained a strong foothold within the marketing displine. I have actively contributed to the annual symposium organized by the researchers led by Professor Jerry Hill of University Illinois at Chicago. At the ANZMAC Conference 2006, I chaired a special topic session on entrepreneurial which was well attended. In our ARC Discovery project this concept was examined in depth where it was found that both high-tech and non-tech companies actively adopt entrepreneurial marketing practices to gain entry in to highly competitive markets. A paper based on these findings will be presented at the AMA Summer 2008 Conference and the Marketing Academy UK Conference, 2008. |
