Brief Description |
| Establishing Legitimacy through Identity Work |
This project, the basis for my PhD studies, examines how individuals' engage in identity work at the organizational level. Organizations face exponential social responsibility pressures; the need to be seen as "legitimate" by both insiders and outsiders. The study looks at how organisational members construct legitimacy through their identity work. |
| Strategic management of destinations and sustainability of competitive advantage |
We examine the variation in the decline of tourist destinations as a phenomenon, drawing on theories from strategic management, political science and public sector management, and organisational ecology. Particularly, we are interest in how the management of resources and infrastructure preserves the competitive advantage of a destination or, conversely, erodes its most valuable resource. |
| The disconnect between HR practices and the ageing workforce |
Current HR practices were developed and honed on a workforce much younger than current and future workforces and in the environment within which such a workforce exists. Until recently it had not been considered that the age of the cohort was a relevant factor. Rather the assumption has been that the practices of HR are universal. . The central issue for understanding the relevance of HR practices to older workers is to first examine the implicit assumptions of HR: That the characteristics of the workforce and the work environment are constant across ages. |

Thesis Topic
Constructions of legitimacy through identity work.
Thesis Description
In the face of corporate greening and socially responsible practices, organizations are under intense pressure to maintain the perceived legitimacy of institutions. Likewise, the legitimacy of an institution is of important to insiders as well as outsiders. While there is a wealth of evidence to suggest that legitimacy is critical for organizational success, the process of how legitimacy is constructed by organizational members is largely unknown. My PhD research aims to elucidate the growing body of literature on identity work; as well as integrating the individual- and organizational-level constructs of legitimacy.
