The Business School offers two honours programs, the Bachelor of Business Management (Honours) and the Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) programs. Below is information regarding entry requirements, the application process and the program structure for each program. Additional information can be found on the program and courses database for each program.
Information about the current research strengths in the School and for specific academics please refer to Research Expertise; Our Staff; or for all UQ staff refer to UQ reSEARCHers.
Entry Requirements
The entry requirements for each program are as follows:
Entry to the Honours program is by invitation only, which usually results after a prospective student has demonstrated, on their application form, that they meet certain criteria. In addition, there may be a quota on the number of Honours places available in any one year. This quota, if applied, is dependent on the proposed field of research and the resulting capacity of the department to ensure your appropriate supervision.
Qualifications
To be invited to join the Honours program you must meet the following criteria:
- Have completed the Bachelor of Business, the Bachelor of Business Management, or the Bachelor of Commerce at The University of Queensland: or
- Have obtained qualifications from another institution, which in the opinion of the Executive Dean and the Head of the School, are at least of the standard and content required by (1) above.
You must satisfy the Executive Dean and the Head of the School, that you would be a suitable candidate for the Honours degree, based on your qualifications from a tertiary institution and any further work that they may prescribe.
You may not enrol for the Honours degree more than 2 academic years after the completion of the required pass degree, or equivalent qualification, unless the Executive Dean, after consultation with the Head of the School, gives permission to do so. This permission will only be granted in special circumstances.
As a guideline only, the minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) required for admission to the Honours programs is at least 5.5 overall. However a high demand for entry to the Honours programs may result in the required GPA to be higher. Some consideration will be given to applications with the required GPA in business related courses in the final two years of study. Each case is assessed on any individual basis.
International students
In addition to the criteria noted in Qualifications above, it is necessary for international students to meet the English language requirements

Ethical Research
It is the responsibility of all research students to ensure research undertaken is ethically sound. In its simplest form, ethics is acting in a way that is, as a very minimum, acceptable to society at large. At The University of Queensland, there are three underlying principles of which sound ethical research must be based. (1) "The requirement to do good: (2) the duty to avoid causing harm; (3) respect for the person". In addition, for research to be considered ethical, there are a number of general procedures that must be followed. These include such things as the safety and retention of data collected; statements of authorship of the research; and the disclosure of any potential conflicts of interest.
Research students within the UQ Business School are required to read and become familiar with The University of Queensland Guidelines for Ethical Review of Research Involving Humans and related links found on the web site of the Ethics Office web site:
The Ethics Office is part of the office of Research and Postgraduate Studies, located in Cumbrae-Stewart Building, telephone: (07) 3365 3924, Email: humanethics@research.uq.edu.au.
