- an opportunity to present research at an in-house conference venue
- a supportive environment for fostering academic discussion
- fostering of peer-support and networking between students and staff across the whole school

Report on 2009 Colloquium
The annual Research Colloquium held on 20 July 2009 was attended by 100 registrants with academic and student representatives from all clusters of the School. Twenty-five student presentations were scheduled from which staff, students and guests could select their program for the day. The program overview shows the variety of topics covered.
The opening plenary session was delivered by Professor Mat Hayward who spoke on "First Impressions in Publishing Research" and the closing plenary session - "Translating Research into Practice" was delivered by Mr Rob Douglas, Director, UQ Business School Commercial.
Awards for the best abstracts were judged by the School's Research Director, Professor Janet McColl-Kennedy, and the Acting Head of School's nominee, Professor Anne Wyatt, on the following criteria:
- significance of problem/topic;
- rationale for study(ies);
- critical analysis of the literature;
- appropriateness of methodologies used as applicable to the paper; and
- coherence of overall argument.
The winners of the abstract awards for 2009 were:
- Best abstract by an Honours student - Paul Kelly (BCom Honours Program). Supervisor: Associate Professor Julie Walker;
- Best abstract by a confirmed RHD candidate - Grace Yanchi Mui (PhD Program). Supervisors: Larelle Chapple, Peter Clarkson, Peter Green;
- Best abstract by a provisional RHD candidate - Michael Axelsen (PhD Program). Supervisors: Peter Green, Fiona Rohde.
