UQ Business School student part of Smart State Rising Star

Friday 9 June 2006

University of Queensland Business School PhD student Nicky Milsom is Deputy CEO of Magnetica which last night won the Smart State Rising Star Award.

A small company specialising in the commercialisation of magnetic resonance imaging technology, Magnetica focuses on superconducting magnet design. The company has its own in-house technical team but also works with researchers from UQ's Biomedical Engineering Group in the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (ITEE).

Milsom said, "Our innovative magnetic systems improve the quality of the image which we hope will lead to improved diagnostic reliability."

Milsom is a UQ Business School MBA graduate and current PhD student.

She said, "My PhD investigates the issues around the commercialisation of public research but it's taken a bit of a back seat lately because I've been so busy with Magnetica."

"However, in some ways I am living my PhD!"

Premier Peter Beattie hosted the awards dinner at Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre last night.

He said, "Our state's organisations are leading the nation in terms of innovation, best practice, and job creation."
