UQ Business School graduates will be in even greater demand thanks to a new specialisation in Quantitative Finance available for the first time in semester one 2005.
Lecturer Dr Jamie Alcock said the Quantitative Finance stream was developed in response to employer demand for graduates with strengths in corporate finance, investment management, and quantitative finance.
He said: "UQ Business School Commerce (Honours) graduates have always been in high demand. Most are recruited by investment banks in Sydney and Melbourne or overseas before they even finish their studies.".
Dr Alcock said the new stream was developed after a review of both employer demand and the School's teaching capacity.
"UQ Business School has a depth of expertise in the field that ranks it among the top business schools in the region", he said.
"The School has seven leading professors across the accounting and finance disciplines."
Professor of Finance Steve Gray said sound quantitative skills were an integral part of any business education.
"We want all our graduates to be able to analyse and solve complex problems, not just talk about them. A sophisticated understanding of the numbers is becoming a powerful competitive edge in the employment market place - in general management as much as in finance."
UQ Business School finance academics recently won two prestigious Australian Research Council Discovery grants.
Professor Steve Gray and Dr Maosen Zhong will conduct a comprehensive examination of popular asset pricing models. The result will be a benchmarking tool for all corporate and government investment decisions.
Professor and Head of School, Tim Brailsford, will work with colleagues from other universities to examine and quantify price movements and the associated risk for mineral and oil prices - leading to the development of better risk management models.
