Public sector expert recognised by her peers

Tuesday 21 February 2006

Dr Patty Renfrow

UQBS academic Dr Patty Renfrow has been made a National Fellow of the Institute of Public Administration Australia (IPAA).

IPAA Queensland Managing Director Ms Dianne James said IPAA's aim was to promote excellence in the public sector by enabling people with a common interest in public administration and public policy to exchange ideas on current trends and innovations in public administration, promote best practice within the sector and provide valuable professional development programs for those working within the public sector.

She said, "Dr Renfrow has been an active member of IPAA for many years, serving as an elected member of the governing Council in Queensland, chairing our Intellectual and Professional Development Committee, steering many of our research projects, and serving on the editorial board of our quarterly magazine The Public Interest. She was recently elected as Vice-President and so will continue play a key role in the leadership of IPAA."

"In addition to Dr Renfrow's outstanding service to the Institute, her research on the Senior Executive Services in the Australian public sector over many years and her various consulting work with the public sector - such as her 1998 project The Survey of Queensland Women for the Office of Women's Affairs - are important contributions to the practice of public administration."

"She is very worthy of the rank of IPAA National Fellow."

Renfrow said she was delighted with the award. "I'm a strong supporter of the Institute and its work so this is a real honour."

"The public sector is one of Queensland's biggest employers and many UQ Business School graduates will find themselves working in public sector roles at some point.

"It's an important part of a business graduate's education to understand the particular issues and concerns of the public sector."

Dr Renfrow lectures in management and public management, her principal areas of expertise are human resource management, public sector accountability, and public sector reform.
