Sustainable Business Unit

Sustainability is a key contemporary issue and challenge facing business and industry. At a time when a growing body of scientific evidence, such as the Stern Review, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fourth Assessment Report, the Garnaut Review, and the Synthesis Report of the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, confirms a relation between human-induced changes in the composition of the Earth's atmosphere and the warming of the climate system, it is apparent that there is an imperative for business to act.

These changes are projected to have significant impacts on climate, weather patterns, and the severity and frequency of extreme weather events, such as cyclones, hailstorms, drought, bushfires and floods.

Early and drastic cuts in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over the next decades are required if the risk of a runaway effect of unmitigated climate change is to be avoided. In light of well-recognised climate science, proactive managers and executives are attempting to climate proof their organisations and develop new value adding products and services.

In response to these challenges, the Sustainable Business Unit was formed as part of the ongoing commitment towards sustainability research and practice at UQ Business School. The Sustainable Business Unit assists business organisations with developing and implementing corporate sustainability measures and climate change adaptation strategies, and provides access to leading experts and the latest research in corporate sustainability. Its mission is to serve as Australia's leading source of research and information on corporate sustainability and climate change adaptation strategies.

The Sustainable Business Unit provides both applied research and consultancy services for business organisations that are committed to working towards a sustainable future, including:

  • GHG auditing and audit verification
  • Development of value added GHG management strategies
  • Corporate sustainability and climate change adaptation strategies
  • Briefings on legislative reporting requirements
  • Development and implementation of tools for mapping corporate sustainability and sustainability-oriented culture change.

As one of the premier Business Schools in the Asia Pacific region, UQ Business School holds the dominant position on thought leadership in Australian Business Schools and is currently the leader in Sustainable Business research.
